About the project

Climate Ready South East Scotland is a new project supporting collaborative climate action in the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region.

The region is home to 26% of Scotland’s population and is an important centre of commerce, culture and government. It’s iconic places, landscapes and heritage are globally significant.

However, the effects of climate change are already being felt across the region – from increased flooding, to rising sea levels and more extreme weather. That’s why, as well as taking more action to reduce carbon emissions, we must also take steps to adapt to climate change.

Led by Verture, in partnership with the region’s six local authorities, Climate Ready South East Scotland is enabling us to better understand how climate change will affect the region, the key impacts, risks and opportunities we face, and where we need to act.

Between October 2024 and March 2025, we are carrying out a regional climate risk and opportunity assessment, bringing together the best available scientific evidence, alongside local knowledge and lived experience. The assessment is strengthening our understanding of the impacts of climate change on nature, communities, the build environment, public services, infrastructure and businesses across the region.

We’ve also commissioned new evidence on coastal change and the economic impacts of climate change for the region, and are working with the local climate hubs to engage diverse communities with the project, including through our Story Map.

The project will inform decision-making across the region, and aims to lay the foundations for longer-term collaboration.

Climate Ready South East Scotland is a collaboration between Verture and six local authorities: City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian. The project is being delivered as part of the Regional Prosperity Framework with support from Capital City Partnership. It is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Scottish Government.
