Reflections on COP30

Reflections on COP30

Having spent a week at COP30, it was inspiring to see so much ambition and appetite for change. It was also frustrating to see the slow pace of change being suggested, and the clear vested interests who stood in the way of quicker progress.

The COP process remains the only game in town. As we roll from Belem into next year, and a conference which looks likely to be held in Turkey (albeit administered by Australia), I was heartened by the words of my colleague Jonny Casey, the Head of Programmes and Partnerships here at Verture. As Jonny pointed out, most of the work happens between COPs – negotiations between nations, pressure from NGOs, and local campaigns which gain their own momentum. It’s in that spirit that we look forward to seeing what comes next.
